In their first and second games respectively, the Johnson University Royals and the Toccoa Falls College Eagles battled hard to earn the first victory of the season. Toccoa coming off a five goal loss to Warner University just a few days earlier showed a resolve to earn a result and a valiant effort to get on the scoreboard early. Their first shot of the match came in the 9th minute giving Freshman recruit, Jailie Bullock, her first of 8 saves on the night.
The Lady Royals answered immediately with two quality attempts to penetrate the Eagles' defensive line just seconds after the threat. Sophomore, Abby Barron, fired off her first of two shots for the night after beating the defense and sending the ball just inches wide of the goal post.
The game winning goal came in the 28th minute after a well orchestrated Toccoa attack fell short on the Royal's defensive line, resulting in a quick, well executed possesion through the midfield to mount a counter attack that would see Abby Barron to a one-on-one from a ball sent forward by Senior and captain, Lori St. John, to face off with Toccoa's Goal Keeper, Emily Truelove, where Abby was able to make a touch around the advancing keeper and put the ball in the back of an open net, making it the first ever goal by a Lady Royal on the home field of the Eagles.
Both teams continued to fight to put their team ahead, but the final buzzer sounded with a 1-0 Royal victory.
Johnson University will travel to Macon, GA on September 9 to take on the Wesleyan Wolves. Toccoa Falls College takes the field against Florida College August 29.
