KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Johnson baseball continued its strong start to the season over the weekend, completing a three-game sweep of Northwestern Ohio behind steady pitching, timely offense, and consistent defensive play.
The Royals opened the series with an offensive showcase, earning a 13–11 win in the opener. Johnson struck early and often, highlighted by a decisive seven-run fourth inning that created separation. Luke Wilson paced the offense with three hits and two RBIs, while JJ Menesini crossed the plate four times. Despite a late push from the Racers, the Royals' bullpen held firm, with Kaleb Townsend recording the final outs to secure the victory.
Game two of the series saw Johnson rely on pitching and execution in a 3–1 win. The Royals scored twice in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fifth, while the pitching staff limited UNOH to just three hits. Jacob Jacome delivered a strong start, working six innings and striking out six, before Andrew Uharriet closed the game in the seventh to earn the save.
Johnson completed the sweep on Sunday with another 3–1 victory, once again leaning on dominant pitching. Tyler Barfield was outstanding on the mound, tossing six shutout innings and striking out seven. The Royals manufactured runs in the first, seventh, and eighth innings, while Jordan Hosman and Kaleb Townsend combined to shut down UNOH over the final three frames.
Head coach Dave Serrano was pleased with the team's overall performance and continued development.
"This was another good weekend of success for our team. The starting pitching was very good across the board and we had some great performances out of the bullpen in all three games," Serrano said. "We played very complimentary defense again. I felt we faced a team in UNOH that threw some good arms at us and challenged our offense. We will become a much better offensive team as time goes. Bottom line is we aren't a finished product and we are having team success."
The Royals will look to carry that momentum forward as they continue through the early portion of the season.
