Royals Battle No. 20 Cumberlands in Hard-Fought Home Contest
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Johnson men's basketball put together one of its most complete offensive performances of the young season on Monday night but came up short against No. 20-ranked University of the Cumberlands, 96–84.
After falling behind early, the Royals found rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Patriots 46–37 behind a balanced attack and efficient shooting from the field. Johnson shot 44% overall and knocked down eight threes while converting 22 of 29 free throws (75.9%).
Senior forward Mason Lockhart paced the Royals with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and added six rebounds. Davon Cottle provided a major spark off the bench with 18 points as well, including three makes from beyond the arc. Mateu Martin added 14 points and six rebounds, while Caden Windle chipped in 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from deep.
Despite the late surge, Cumberlands' hot start proved too much to overcome. The Patriots shot 55% from the field and 56% from three, led by Kyle Duke's 31 points and Brant Smithers' 20 points off the bench.
The loss drops Johnson to 0–3 on the season, while Cumberlands remains unbeaten at 6–0.
The Royals will return November 19, 2025 as they face #12 Pikeville at home.
