Royals Battle but Fall Short to RV Pikeville, 84–75
The Johnson University men's basketball team put together one of its most complete efforts of the young season, but a late surge from RV Pikeville proved to be the difference in an 84–75 loss Wednesday night inside Douglas E. Karnes Arena.
Pikeville (4–2, 3–0) used a balanced offensive attack, placing five players in double figures. Despite the Royals matching the Bears shot-for-shot for much of the night, a handful of timely threes and a perfect 15–for-15 performance at the free-throw line helped the visitors hold off Johnson.
Mason Lockhart continued his dominant start to the season, leading all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting while also grabbing eight rebounds. Livingston Cross provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and seven boards, and Davon Cottle added 11 points on 3-for-6 from deep.
Johnson trailed just 39–36 at halftime and stayed within one possession for most of the second half, but Pikeville's depth showed down the stretch. The Bears' bench contributed 26 points, highlighted by Rylee Samons' 16 on a perfect 4-for-4 night from beyond the arc.
As a team, the Royals shot an efficient 47.5% from the field and 40% from three while outrebounding Pikeville 34–33. However, the Bears' ability to capitalize on turnovers and convert at the free-throw line ultimately created the separation.
Johnson (0–4, 0–1) will look to build on Wednesday's strong performance as they continue their early-season stretch.
