Royals Capture First-Ever AAC Championship with Thrilling 76-75 Victory
History was made Saturday afternoon as the Johnson men's basketball team captured the first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship in program history, defeating Pikeville 76-75 in a thrilling title game at MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort.
With the win, the Royals officially punch their ticket to the NAIA National Tournament, marking one of the most significant moments in Johnson basketball history.
Johnson (18-13) came out strong early, controlling the tempo and building a 38-30 halftime advantage behind an efficient offensive performance. The Royals shot an impressive 64.6 percent from the field in the contest, executing offensively against a Pikeville squad that entered the championship game with a 27-4 record.
Senior standout Mason Lockhart delivered a championship performance for the ages, pouring in a game-high 37 points while adding 12 rebounds in a dominant 40-minute effort. Lockhart consistently answered every Pikeville run and proved unstoppable inside, shooting 16-of-21 from the floor.
Pikeville surged in the second half, outscoring Johnson 45-38 and setting up a dramatic finish. With the Bears threatening late, the Royals relied on steady execution and key defensive stops in the closing moments to preserve the one-point victory and secure the conference crown.
Davon Cottle added 16 points and five assists, while Livingston Cross contributed 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals in an all-around effort. Tucker Patterson provided a valuable spark off the bench with seven points as Johnson's balanced attack helped withstand Pikeville's late push.
The championship victory represents a historic milestone for the program, as the Royals claim their first AAC Tournament Championship and earn an automatic entry into the upcoming NAIA National Tournament.
Johnson now turns its attention to the national stage, where the Royals will continue their postseason run representing the AAC in the NAIA National Tournament. Tournament seeding and first-round matchups will be announced in the coming days.
