The Lady Royals softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday, taking game one 7-1 before securing a 5-4 walk-off victory in eight innings in game two.
After surrendering an early run in the opener, the Lady Royals quickly took control in the third inning when Megan Armstrong launched a two-run home run to put Johnson in front for good. The offense continued to produce throughout the middle innings, adding single runs in the fourth and fifth before a three-run sixth inning broke the game open.
Reese Burns, Armstrong, and Autumn Caywood each drove in runs during the sixth inning surge, helping Johnson finish with 11 hits in the contest. Armstrong led the way with three RBIs, while Burns, Caywood, Dylan Jablonski, and Madison Hood each contributed at the plate.
In the circle, Lindy Webber delivered a dominant performance, tossing a complete game while allowing just two hits and striking out 13.
Game two proved to be a much tighter battle, as Tennessee Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead. Johnson responded in the fourth inning with an RBI double from Armstrong and an RBI single from Caywood to cut into the deficit.
The Lady Royals continued to chip away, tying the game in the fifth on a Madison Hood RBI double before Armstrong delivered again in the seventh with an RBI single to give Johnson the lead. After Tennessee Wesleyan answered to even the score, the Royals had the final say in extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Kadie Presley came through with a clutch RBI single to bring home the game-winning run and complete the sweep.
Armstrong once again led the offense with three hits and two RBIs in game two, while Presley added three hits, including the walk-off. Hood and Caywood also drove in runs for Johnson. In the circle, Madisun Pritchard was outstanding in relief, tossing five shutout innings to earn the win and keep the Royals in position for the comeback.
Head coach Dayna Carter praised the team's overall performance following the sweep:
"We a few really good defensive plays and overall, Aly Dickerson had an unbelieveable day and Megan had a great day for us and KP got the walk off so that was pretty awesome."
