Strong Fourth Quarter Not Enough as Royals Fall to Pikeville
The Johnson University women's basketball team showed resilience down the stretch, but a slow middle stretch proved costly in a 79–57 loss to Pikeville on Wednesday evening inside Douglas E. Karnes Arena.
Pikeville (3–1, 2–1) established control early, outscoring the Royals 23–15 in the first quarter and carrying that momentum into halftime with a 43–28 advantage. Johnson continued to compete, but the Bears' size and efficiency on the glass created too much separation before the Royals mounted a late push.
Junior guard Jordan Heifner delivered another standout performance, pouring in a game-high 23 points on 9-of-21 shooting while adding four rebounds. Gibson Boykin provided a lift off the bench with 11 points, knocking down three triples, and Emery Tollett anchored the interior with nine rebounds and six points.
Despite the Royals' strong fourth quarter—outscoring Pikeville 19–15—the deficit proved too steep. Pikeville's balanced scoring attack featured five players in double figures, including a dominant performance from Halle Collins, who posted 15 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. The Bears shot 53.8% from beyond the arc and controlled the boards with a 44–41 margin.
Johnson finished the night shooting 35.6% from the field and 7-of-21 from three, battling to the final buzzer with an energetic closing stretch.
The Royals (2–4, 1–1) continue to show flashes of growth and will look to build on Wednesday's strong finish as they move deeper into their conference slate.
