Royals Women Deliver Strong Performance to Wrap Up Fall Schedule
October 20, 2025
The Johnson University women's tennis team delivered an emphatic performance on Saturday afternoon, securing a convincing 7-0 team victory behind a strong showing in both doubles and singles play.
The match began with a competitive doubles round. At the top spot, the duo of Averie Stalnaker and Berkley Clark battled hard but ultimately fell 5-7 in a tightly contested match. However, momentum quickly shifted in favor of the Royals as Marina Lasneaux and Maria Ponce rolled to a dominant 6-1 win at the No. 2 position. With the No. 3 doubles match won by forfeit, Johnson claimed the all-important doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead.
The singles lineup continued the team's momentum with a clean sweep across all five contested courts.
At No. 1 Singles, Marina Lasneaux was in full control, leading 4-1 before her opponent was forced to retire, handing her the win. Averie Stalnaker delivered a flawless performance at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-0 without dropping a single game. Francesca Crosa followed with a gritty, straight-sets victory at No. 3, battling through a tight second set to secure a 6-4, 7-5 result.
Berkley Clark mirrored her doubles partner's dominance in singles, notching a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 position. Rounding out the day was Maria Ponce at No. 5, who showed resilience and poise, coming back from a set down to win in a super tiebreak, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.
"This was a total team effort today," said Head Coach Seth Hale. "We were able to get a good combo of tight wins on some courts and then some dominating wins on others. We've really been focusing on mental focus and I was able to see that across the board, regardless of the scores and situations."
With the win, the Royals wrap up the playing portion of the fall schedule with a record of 2-1 and will have to wait to compete until the fall semester.
